Biodegradable plastics are plastic products that can be decomposed into reusable substances by microorganisms in the natural environment. Compared with traditional plastics, biodegradable plastics are mainly made of natural polymer materials such as plant starch and microbial synthesized polyhydroxy fatty acids. These natural materials can quickly decompose into harmless substances such as carbon dioxide, water, and biomass under appropriate environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, and ultimately enter the ecological cycle system.
Biodegradable bags are made from biobased materials that are partially or entirely sourced from renewable resources such as corn starch, calcium carbonate, sugarcane, and cellulose. Compared with traditional petroleum based plastics, the degradation process of bioplastic bags in the environment is more environmentally friendly because they can be decomposed into carbon dioxide and water by environmental microorganisms under certain environmental conditions, thereby reducing their long-term impact on the environment. This biodegradability not only reduces the accumulation of plastic waste in the natural environment, but also lowers the pollution pressure on marine ecosystems, protecting species safety and ecosystem security.
In addition, the use of bioplastics has also driven innovation in packaging design, providing both practical and environmentally friendly material choices. For example, polylactic acid (PLA) PBAT and other bioplastics have been used in various packaging applications, including food containers and disposable tableware. These applications not only improve the sustainability of packaging, but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.
1. Starch based biodegradable plastics: Using starch as the main raw material, starch is mixed with biodegradable polymers or plasticizers through processes such as gelatinization, plasticization, and condensation. The plastics produced by this method usually have good degradation performance and plasticity.
2. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA): PHA is a type of polyester substance synthesized by microorganisms and obtained through large-scale cultivation, extraction, and purification by microorganisms. PHA plastics have good biodegradability and plasticity, and can rapidly degrade in soil and water.
Biodegradable plastics have broad application potential in various fields.
1. Food packaging: Biodegradable plastics can be used for food packaging to avoid potential threats to food safety and health from traditional plastic packaging. Some biodegradable plastics can also extend the shelf life of food.
2. In the field of agriculture: Biodegradable plastics can be used for agricultural cover films, solid fertilizer packaging bags, etc., reducing pollution to farmland soil and promoting soil fertility improvement.
3. Medical devices: Biodegradable plastics can be used to manufacture disposable medical supplies, such as surgical gloves, gowns, etc., to better protect the health and safety of patients.
Biodegradable plastics, as an important technology for sustainable development, have the following potential:
1. Reduce dependence on petroleum resources: Biodegradable plastics are mainly manufactured from renewable resources, which can reduce the demand for limited petroleum resources and lower energy consumption.
2. Reduce the pollution of plastic waste to the environment: Biodegradable plastics can decompose into harmless substances, reducing the pollution of soil and water caused by plastic waste, thereby protecting the ecological environment.
3. Promote circular economy: Biodegradable plastics can be reused after biodegradation, achieving the recycling of material resources and reducing environmental burden.
In summary, with the continuous development and promotion of related technologies, we have reason to believe that biodegradable plastics will bring more benefits to future society and the environment through their biodegradability and environmental characteristics. People should actively support and promote the research and application of biodegradable plastics, and work together to build a more sustainable society and environment.
