Biodegradable bags, also known as eco-bags, compostable bags or bioplastics, are going mainstream and this is a big win for the planet. It's a small step, but with continued support, its impact can certainly lead us to a plastic-free future. The growing popularity of biodegradable bags among consumers and the retail industry is creating a hopeful and healthy competition in the marketplace.
Starch-based biodegradable materials
Biodegradable bags are made from natural corn starch. This is actually polylactic acid, a bioplastic made from corn that has similar properties to traditional plastics. This material absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide as the plants that make them. Therefore, when PLA decomposes, it causes no net increase in carbon dioxide gas.
In addition, the starch-based biodegradable bags are compostable - as the corn starch compound absorbs moisture, it breaks down into small pieces that are easily digested by bacteria.
